Self Driving Cars Are On The Loose
Tesla’s aren’t the only ones using new innovative idea of self driving cars. nuTonomy is a start-up taxi service that originated it’s innovation in MIT. With their headquarters located in Boston, they began trials of their new self driving cars in Singapore. nuTonomy’s expansion to Singapore built a strong relationship with the Singaporean government, where they funded nuTonomy with $16 Million Dollars. This collaboration was critical to helping Singapore drive into bring the state a new transportation method and at the same time, help nuTonomy become commercial by 2018.
nuTonomy stated that it will begin testing in Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park by the Seaport section of Boston by the end of 2016. The vehicle of choice to test is the Renault Zoe electric vehicle, where an installed software will allow the engineer that is on board to test, program, and safely control the vehicle at will. nuTonomy is also planning on partnering with Grab, an Uber competitor in the Southeast, to collect data and driving people to their destinations.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh stated that, “This is an exciting step forward”, for both the public and partners of the taxi-service. It seems that Boston is all open arms to be the leader in the new generation of transportation where self driving cars will take over the roads.
